YOUTH COUNSELLING - PORT ADELAIDE & ONLINE
Helping young individuals (11-21) navigate challenges, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies for a positive future.
In the blink of an eye, your child is a teenager or young adult. As they move through adolescence and start noticing the many changes in their body, emotions, and friendships, you as a parent or caregiver may also be noticing changes. It’s natural to wonder “is this just typical teenage behaviour, or could my teen be struggling and in need of some extra support”?
Is Your Teen Struggling? Common Signs To Look Out For:
Sleep disturbances
Social withdrawal / isolation
Change in mood that seems out of the ordinary
Loss of motivation
Substance use
Changes in appetite
Anxiety about going to school
If you are unsure how to start the Counselling conversation with your Teen - you might like to get a few tips from our Fact Sheet - Starting the Counselling Conversation - Tips for Parents.
Confidentiality – Privacy Matters
It’s normal to feel worried about sharing personal things with someone new. Confidentiality is an important part of counselling, and Teens naturally want to feel safe knowing that what they talk about stays private.
Everything shared remains confidential unless:
You are at risk of harm to yourself or someone else.
There is a concern about child abuse.
Your session notes are legally required by a court of law.
A referral to another professional is needed — in this case, I will always seek your permission first and discuss what information is shared.
Outside of these rare circumstances, what you share in counselling stays between us unless you choose to share something with your parent or caregiver.
How We Can Support Your Teen
-
Mentoring
Cheryl offers a supportive space for teens to confide, check in, and talk openly about what’s going on in their lives. Providing consistent support, and helping young people learn the skills they want to build, at their own pace.
-
School Challenges
Support for the everyday struggles that may come with school life — from anxiety about attending, friendship issues, fitting in, bullying, to academic pressure. Sessions give your teen space to talk about how these challenges affect them, at their own pace, while exploring changes and strategies they feel ready to try.
-
Emotional Wellbeing
For deeper struggles such as anxiety, trauma, grief, negative thinking, substance use, or big changes that feel hard to cope with. Sessions offer time to talk about what’s going on, explore what’s working and what isn’t, build on strengths, and learn coping strategies your teen feels ready to try.
-
Career Planning
Deciding what to do after school can feel stressful, and it’s completely normal not to have it all figured out yet. These sessions provide space to explore strengths, interests, and future possibilities in a supportive way. Build confidence and clarity without the pressure of needing all the answers right now.
Why Choose Cheryl for Teen Counselling?
Cheryl’s approach combines professional counselling training, experience as a youth mentor, and being a mum to two children. This mix helps her connect with young people in a way that feels real, relatable, and supportive.
Cheryl understands that sitting across from a stranger in a clinical setting can feel intimidating. That’s why she offers informal options such as walk-and-talk sessions or playing games to help build rapport and make counselling feel less overwhelming.
Cheryl’s uses proven approaches tailored to each teen, such as:
Helping teens clarify their own goals and tap into their inner strengths for change.
Building on what’s already working and giving clear, practical steps that make a difference straight away.
Teaching skills to recognise and shift unhelpful thought patterns, helping teens feel more confident and resilient.

“Throughout my career and personal journey, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful the right support can be. One moment that stands out was when I worked with a teenager struggling with anxiety and self-doubt. They felt unheard, lost in their emotions, and unsure how to move forward. Through our sessions, we created a safe space where they could express themselves freely. Over time, I watched their confidence grow, their perspective shift, and their ability to manage stress improve.
This is why I do what I do. I believe that with the right support, healing and growth are always possible. “ Cheryl - Counsellor
